Legend says that during a trip to Spain, Forrest Mars noted that soldiers ate small pieces of chocolate wrapped in a hard sugar glaze, to not melt. Inspired by this idea, Forrest Mars returned to his kitchen and invented the recipe for M & M‘s candy, which entered the market in 1941. In 1948, the packaging has changed, M & M’s candies being sold in the brown bags. In 1954, he released a version with hazelnut, the both products having a huge success. That same year, he started TV advertising, both as simple, as well as those of nuts, especially as the slogan “milk chocolate melts in your mouth not in your hand. ” In 1960, M & M‘s with peanuts have emerged with three new colors, besides the initial brown: red, green and yellow, and in 1972 came and orange candies.

In 1995, half a century after they were introduced to the market first M & M’s, American consumers have helped to be writing a new chapter in its history. Through a marketing campaign, they were asked to vote for two new colors that  are already among the famous candy. They had to choose between blue, pink, purple or except any other color of those already existing. Following this campaign, 54 percent of those over 10 million participants chose blue as winner. The four M & M‘s characters (red, yellow, green and blue) were the protagonists of the company’s first three-dimensional film, first shown at the opening of the store “M&M‘s World Store in Las Vegas” in November 1998.11
