Wedding favors are a gift for guests, meant to thank them for being a part of the most important day of your life, as well as to give them something to remember this day by.

But where do wedding favors really come from?

Lost of people see the wedding favors as a souvenir, a rather new introduction to weddings, but the truth is that they have been around since the 15th century. In Italy, the future couple and their families would give each other wedding favors asĀ  gifts that celebrated the engagement.

In England, manufacturers started making special boxes for special sweets. These boxes were adorned with precious stones or crystals. It was common for the European aristocracy to offer boxes of sweets to their guests, even if the boxes actually contained sugar cubes. Back in those days, sugar was a product accessible only to the wealthy class. In time, the price of sugar dropped and this tradition was adopted by everyone.

Throughout the years, tradition has changed. In general, the boxes that are sold to serve as wedding favors, contain 5 pieces of candy, each with its own symbolism: prosperity, fertility, happiness, health and longevity. Boxes are then tied up with ribbons made or lace, silk or other fine materials.

Pretty much everything can be a wedding favor these days, so the choice is entirely up to the bride and groom. People offer silver objects, crystals, porcelain and even scented candles and bottles of wine.

The wedding favors are generally placed on the table before the party begins. There is either one wedding favor per guest or per family. However, some couples choose to hand out wedding favors at the end of the reception, just as each guest is leaving.

Some people think that wedding favors are an useless expense. Truth of the matter is, they are not mandatory, but they do make up for cute presents to thank people for taking the time to be with you on the special day. Wedding favors don’t really have to be that expensive if you have the time and imagination to make them yourself.

Some couple opt for giving out personalized CDs with pictures from the wedding or past pictures of the happy couple. You can buy small bottles and fill them with sand and add a personalized printed message in each. Could even be a love quote.
